fild stands for finger-induced lucid dream. after a wake in the second half of the night, when you are on the edge of sleep, you move two fingers very slightly, as if pressing two piano keys in turn, for about a minute, then do a reality check. the tiny movement keeps a thread of awareness while the body falls asleep. it is a community technique with no controlled research, and a variant of the wake-initiated method.
the steps
- wake after five to six hours of sleep. stay up only a minute or two; fild works best when you are still very sleepy. see wbtb.
- lie down in the position you fall asleep in fastest. get comfortable and let yourself start to drift.
- when you feel sleep coming, begin moving your index and middle fingers alternately, very slightly, as if pressing two piano keys. the movement should be almost imaginary, a few millimeters at most.
- keep it up for thirty seconds to a minute, without counting carefully or trying hard.
- do a reality check without stopping the movement: pinch your nose and try to breathe. if you can, you are in a dream. get up out of the bed in the dream.
- if the check passes, you are awake. either try once more or go back to sleep normally.
why the fingers
the idea is the same as every wake-initiated method: keep a small amount of awareness alive while the body switches off. a tiny repeated movement is easier to hold than a mental image, and small enough not to keep the body awake. when it works, the finger movement carries into the dream body and the nose-pinch check fails there. the wider family of techniques is in the wild technique.
honest notes
fild has no controlled trial behind it and a lot of enthusiastic videos. treat it as a thing to try a few times after you have built the basics: recall, dream signs, and the intention rehearsal in the mild technique. it costs little, because you are allowed to fall asleep if it does not work.
questions people ask
does fild actually work?
some practitioners report reliable results, especially when very sleepy after a short wake. there is no controlled study. it works best as an addition to the intention method, not a replacement.
how sleepy should you be for fild?
very. it is designed for the moment just before sleep, which is why the wake before it should be short, a minute or two rather than the ten to twenty used for other techniques.
