see how sleep connects memory and insight

10×
task improvement in nappers who dreamed about the maze

what we know

dreams can show what the sleeping mind is working on. in 2010, researchers trained 99 people on a virtual maze. among the people who napped, those who dreamed about the maze improved about ten times more. an overnight study later found the same association.

controlled studies show that sleep can also support insight. one night of sleep more than doubled the chance of finding a hidden shortcut in a number task. rem naps improved solutions that required people to connect distant ideas.

the edge of sleep may matter too. in 2021, people who spent one minute in n1, the lightest sleep stage, were about three times as likely to find a hidden rule later. researchers compared them with people who stayed awake.

use it in practice

totem plays your story as you enter sleep, when n1 imagery can form. in the morning, it supports the capture habit from the recall research. you can record ideas and details before they fade.

what we do not know

sleep supports memory even when you do not remember a dream. this research does not show that dream recall causes memory consolidation.
