lucidity is real

science has verified awareness during sleep

1981
first signal-verified lucid dream, stanford sleep lab

what we know

a lucid dream begins when you realize you are dreaming while it is happening. that awareness can give you more choice inside the dream. control can follow, but it is not required.

sleep labs can verify that moment. at stanford in 1981, dreamers used agreed eye movements to signal from verified rem sleep. forty years later, four independent labs held small two-way conversations with people who were dreaming.

the experience is also common. across 34 studies and 24,282 people, about half reported at least one lucid dream. roughly one in four reported having them each month.

use it in practice

totem helps you practice the verified skill: notice that you are dreaming while the dream continues. awareness counts. control is an extra. you can record and value a lucid dream even when you could not steer it.

what we do not know

a phone cannot independently verify a lucid dream. only a sleep lab can do that. totem records the experience you report, in your words.
