see how timed prompts can guide a theme
what we know
precise prompts can guide a dream at sleep onset. mit’s dormio protocol gives people a chosen theme as they enter n1 sleep. that theme then appears in the sleep-onset dream. in a controlled follow-up, theme incubation also increased creative output on tasks about that theme.
the later-night evidence is newer and mixed. a 2026 pilot found that sleep-onset themes returned in later rem dreams for some people. another 2026 study used sounds to guide rem dreams toward unsolved puzzles. people solved puzzles that appeared in dreams more often the next day, 42% compared with 17%.
personally meaningful material may have an advantage. concern-related words played during rem entered dreams about four times as often as neutral words. a separate trial of 495 people found that ordinary bedtime stories did not reduce sleep disturbance more than a digital control. that trial did not measure dreams, so it cannot answer whether stories change dream recall or content.

use it in practice
you choose your dream intention. totem plays a personally familiar story at sleep onset, then leaves space for that intention. these choices follow the parts of dream-incubation research with the strongest support.
research has not yet shown whether a nightly story changes what you remember from dreams. totem asks what happened each morning and tracks your reports over time.
what we do not know
no controlled trial shows that sleep stories improve dream recall, dream quality, or lucidity. totem does not promise those results.
